Risk assesment

- When filming on the stairs you can make sure nothing is on them to avoid and dangers like falling down the stairs.

- Loose wires from lighting and camera cables should be tapes on the floor or tucked away so no one can trip over them.

-When filming in the dark make sure there is a clear pathway to avoid tripping up.

We feel happy with our organisation. I think that we are working well together as a group and that we are managing time well.

Looking at opening title sequnce in film- the Happening

The main function of thriller opening title sequences is that it needs to have the devices to hook and hold it’s audience.
The Happening is successful at doing this in a number of ways.
In the very beginning the screen in full of clouds that are normal looking for a sunny day, the music matches this imagery by being not to sinister but being slow and with an almost classical tune, but tension and suspense is built within the audience as the scene goes on. The clouds start to darken and so does the sky surrounding them suggesting the day wearing on and a storm coming. By the clouds darkening it shows rain or a thunderstorm. It signifies to the audience that something is coming.
As the next scene beginnings were met with a casual and usual day out at the park. We know it’s a usual day in the park because of the techniques used. The lighting is natural sunlight so we know it’s a sunny day and therefore lots of people would be at the park. The sound is natural also, people shouting, talking, laughing, a dog panting as it’s walking. The camera pans out and then zooms in onto two females in the park. The camera angles itself are nothing to intricate because it keeps a completely naturalistic flow and this helps the audience to associate with their surroundings and start to feel ambience again after the cloud scene. The effect of this scene shows normal mundane life, society as normal but it also sets up the enigma that the audience worry about because it makes the audience think they live in a similar society, what’s to stop the antagonist attacking their world. The thought of this thrills the audience making it effective.
In my opinion The Happening is a good opening to a thriller but it does have some faults. It’s good because it hooks the audience, it sets the enigma, introduces the audience to the protagonist and it does thrill it’s audience. By having a high pace it gets to the point which is what a lot of audiences like. However it’s faults is that it ruins connotation by over-doing things, A scene which is suppose to be thriller turns into a comedy.
I have picked up from this opening that I would like to use quite a bit of silence in my own thriller because I think it creates good atmosphere, Also I will try to keep things very subtle instead of using special effects in the way that having people stand still in the happening creates a very thriller look

Identify and explain thriller conventions

There are several classical conventions that make up a thriller
A thriller should be a story of high suspense. It should start with a huge push of high suspense, then return to a low suspense film only to throughout build once again into a high suspense film. This is an effective convention because it grips the audience completely and keeps them watching.
Cause and effect is another major convention which also pushes forward the escalating conflict. The audience want to see the protagonist come through to the end after what seemed like impossible odds. This is such a popular convention because it keeps the plot going at a fast pace so the audience don’t become bored and keep enjoying the film. Also thought some people like to see and similarity between themselves and the protagonist but at the same time feel even though they might have a lot to deal with, at least their problems aren’t as bad as what the main character is dealing with.
The enigma of a film is one of the most major conventions of a thriller film. It is the questions that surround the main story plot and make the film a mystery and hide from the audience the ending. The main reason why the enigma is se important is because it rates the film. People will not like a film because of it and if your enigma reveals the whole story plot and ending too soon people will not stay and watch the end. Also what can enhance an enigma is ‘the hard right turn,’ the hard right turn is such a popular convention because it challenges the audience and really grips them
An unexpected complication always ensures the audience is engaged and acts as a good tension factor, this is such a popular convention because it makes the film unpredictable which is good because the audience don’t want to guess the whole story plot because it’s even happened.

In all there are many conventions that make up a thriller.

Strengths and weaknesses of our continuity task

Attempt two
Strengths: In our second attempt we made a great improvement on our video. Our audio became one of our strengths because we chose a more quite place so there was not much background noise at all and the dialogue could be heard clearly. Our camera angles stayed another strong point of our groups, but we made a few changes, We showed Joe’s face this time because we thought it was more suited to our new location. We used the 180 degree rule as Joe and Ryan were speaking to each other because it worked well as Ryan said one thing there was a slight pause and as the camera reached Joe he answered making it look like the camera was showing the fluent conversation between the two. The match-on-action shot we kept so it looked like a point of view shot. As Joe spoke to Ryan we had the camera on Ryan’s shoulder so it looked like Joe was also speaking to the audience, making the audience feel more connected with the piece. The reverse shot we kept as Ryan coming through the door for the same reason, the audience feel like their entering to. We showed Ryan crossing the room on the way in from a corner shot and on the way out we got a birds eye view of him leaving which gave a great look. Also in this attempt our continuity improved vastly.
Weaknesses: There were two weaknesses I would change if we were to do this project again. Our project towards the end became more comedy than serious so this dramatic change in genre can put some audiences off and ruin the piece for them because just as they were following the story line and anticipating the next shot the whole piece changes and some audiences may loose interest. There is one continuity problem, on one scene Ryan is holding a purse and one another scene he is not.
Outcome: I was very pleased with the outcome of the second piece, I thought it fulfilled the task and filled every aspect that was asked of us.
Targets: Possibly re-film the shots that ruined the continuity, and re-film the last shots as a serious piece.

continuity task

Before attempting our thriller we studied the importance of continuity within a film so the audeicne understand and follow the film better. In our group we had two goes at our continuity taks because the frist was way off the required piece.
Attempt one:
Strengths: There were some strengths in our first attempt at the preliminary task. These included the fact that we used a wider and vsired range of camera angles. We uses these to create different effects, we used the match-on-action shot technique as Ryan walked through the door. We did this so that the viewer feels their entering the room with him. We used a long-shot also with this so the audience can see the type of surrounding their in. We used the reverse shot as Joe and Ryan were talking so that the audience can focus on Ryan’s character and see how uncomfortable he is in the situation. The 180 degree rule was also used whilst dialogue was happening because we felt this kept Joe’s identity hidden yet made the audience curious as to who he is, much like the film ‘pulp fiction.’ We wanted to create the want for an audience to see his full face, another reason why we used extreme close up is because we see Joe’s lips and eyes but yearn to see the whole face but don’t. Other strengths include that we had a good naturalistic acting and quite good lighting. We also tried our best to ensure consistency yet we failed in some shots, for example in one shot the outside lighting would be on but the next it is off.
Weaknesses: Our main weakness was our sound, our original idea was to record all dialogue separately, then silence the sound on the recording and dub over it. This being because the only sound you would hear would be footsteps and voices and this would create a more eerie feel but this proved to difficult and not appropriate for the time given to do the task. So in some scenes there was continuity because there would be a lot of background noise, then in the next none.
Outcome: I was not pleased with the outcome of our video because of the reasons of audio and continuity, therefore I believe we need to re-film and edit our entire project again to meet the standards required.
Targets: Re-film and edit video so group is happy with it.

Our first projectsadly got deleted before we could make a ahrd copy version of it because beliving we wouldn't need it when we made our new one, we didnt make one instantly.

Gothika

Also gothika portrays a trouble protagonist who has trouble mentally and is not sure whether what she’s seeing is real or not. I think it’s a great idea that the woman herself was a psychiatric because reason and her brain are fighting for two different things. I would possible use this idea if I was creating a full length film. I like the scenes were there are lots of people around her and she sees the antagonist, such as when she’s in the shower.
This film is a very good representation of a psychological thriller and also uses twists to keep the audience guessing and the sudden change at the beginning for the protagonists lets us have empathy and care about the character because were feel we only know as much as her which is a great quality to have in a psychological thriller.
