There are several classical conventions that make up a thriller
A thriller should be a story of high suspense. It should start with a huge push of high suspense, then return to a low suspense film only to throughout build once again into a high suspense film. This is an effective convention because it grips the audience completely and keeps them watching.
Cause and effect is another major convention which also pushes forward the escalating conflict. The audience want to see the protagonist come through to the end after what seemed like impossible odds. This is such a popular convention because it keeps the plot going at a fast pace so the audience don’t become bored and keep enjoying the film. Also thought some people like to see and similarity between themselves and the protagonist but at the same time feel even though they might have a lot to deal with, at least their problems aren’t as bad as what the main character is dealing with.
The enigma of a film is one of the most major conventions of a thriller film. It is the questions that surround the main story plot and make the film a mystery and hide from the audience the ending. The main reason why the enigma is se important is because it rates the film. People will not like a film because of it and if your enigma reveals the whole story plot and ending too soon people will not stay and watch the end. Also what can enhance an enigma is ‘the hard right turn,’ the hard right turn is such a popular convention because it challenges the audience and really grips them
An unexpected complication always ensures the audience is engaged and acts as a good tension factor, this is such a popular convention because it makes the film unpredictable which is good because the audience don’t want to guess the whole story plot because it’s even happened.
In all there are many conventions that make up a thriller.
